Dear Friends,
Drug and alcohol abuse has been identified as a serious problem in our communities across the country which in turn has created a critical need for recovery services and supportive housing (in addition to treatment). Saving Our Sisters, Inc was created to meet that need with a mission to offer support services and a safe, drug free residence for women who want to recover and overcome the disease of addiction.
Since opening our doors in 2006, Saving Our Sisters has provided housing, emergency food, transportation, support services and personal care items to over 40 women and assisted nearly 600 women with referrals to needed services. We are committed to empowering women by nurturing potential and restoring hope through recovery. For example, we helped our first graduate complete an Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program and secure affordable housing. She gave back to the Baltimore community as an AmeriCorps member, and is now employed through Johns Hopkins University. Prior to seeking recovery, she was homeless and addicted to heroin. This story is just one of the many “stories of change” that Saving Our Sisters has fostered through our services.
Saving Our Sisters Inc. operates all programming with a volunteer staff of two. In an effort to meet our operating costs (which allows SOS to reach more women), we need community involvement, local business support, and you. I invite you to help us help support these women through a financial donation and/or volunteerism. Your financial contribution to Saving Our Sisters, Inc. is tax deductible and helps provide the revenue necessary to sustain the services we offer now, and for the women we will help in the future. We are always seeking volunteers to conduct or participate in fundraisers, facilitate workshops, share expertise as a Board of Director or participate in one of our organization’s committees. In doing so, you are identifying with the need for recovering women to have adequate and affordable support services which include; housing, transportation, emergency food, personal care items, and workshops.
Here are a few examples of how your financial contributions can sponsor a woman or activity:
· $30.00 (public transportation and personal care items for a new resident for 1 month)
· $50.00 (food for a new resident for 1 week or provide books/ materials for workshops)
· $75.00 (sheets, towels, blankets, emergency clothing, household supplies, alarm clocks)
· $150.00 (pays a portion of the residential program fee for homeless women unable to pay)
President Obama encouraged all of us to participate in the renewal and recovery of our nation through service to our local communities; renewing the spirit of America for generations to come. We hope you are encouraged through financial support or through volunteerism to join with Saving Our Sisters, Inc. as we are “Changing the Lives of Women”. For your convenience, please find the “Support” form attached.
Sincerely,
Deborah McClung
Executive Director
