VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The following are descriptions of essential volunteer positions available to community members. If you are interested providing any of these services, please call 443-629-7965 or email sos2006@savingoursisters.org. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer weekly, monthly, or as needed. If you belong to a group that would like to volunteer, please let us know!

Administrative Support: An administrative assistant is responsible for general clerical support to our organization. Responsibilities may include answering e-mails and phone calls, organizing conference calls, and compiling information packets and other mailings.

Accountant: We are looking  for an individual to assist with record keeping, budget forecasting, and to file yearly state required paperwork for a 501 (c)3 organization.  A volunteer with experience in fiscal oversight for a Maryland nonprofit organization is preferred.

Legal Support: A legal support volunteer will be used to provide legal advice/ recommendations to the Board of Directors and staff of Saving Our Sisters.  Knowledge in city/state zoning requirements, HIPPA laws, providing reasonable acommodations in residential communities, client disclosure limitations, and liability concerns for nonprofit Board Members.   This volunteer will also provide guidance to residents to resolve pending legal issues.  We ask that only members with a law or paralegal background assist with this position.

Fundraisers: We are looking for volunteers to assist our current VISTA volunteer with organizing fundraisers. We ask fundraising volunteers to help with mailings, community outreach, plan one-time or recurring events, develop budgets, secure monetary and/ or in-kind donations.

Grant Writers: Skilled grant writers are more crucial than ever for the growth of Saving Our Sisters.  Grant writers with experience submitting high quality proposals to federal, state, foundation, and corporate organizations are encouraged to help us secure funding for administrative, operating and special event costs associated with providing housing and support services to women recovering from substance abuse.

Transportation to 12 Step Meetings: Our residents are required to attend daily 12 step meetings. The women in our program do not have access to a personal vehicle and are therefore required to a bus or two. For the safety of our residents (especiall during the winter months), we would greatly appreciate a volunteer who would offer to drive residents to and from meetings in an effort to save both time and money.  This is an ideal opportunity for a person who currently attends 12 step meetings in the evenings.

Mentoring: We are asking for members with a desire to listen, guide, and assist our residents on an individual basis with meeting personal goals.  Some areas women need assistance with are; employment opportunities, basic computer training, and financial planning.    Others may request spiritual guidance, cooking lessons, or help exploring creative outlets.

Workshop Facilitators:  Saving Our Sisters offers a variety of workshops for current residents. These workshops include interactive information sessions in money management, wellness, education, relapse prevention, diversity awareness, career development, finding apartments and housing, empowerment, relationships, community involvement, life planning, and communal living. If you have ideas for other workshops which you can plan and facilitate, please let us know.

12 Step Female Sponsors: We are asking for women in recovery who have experience working the 12 steps of AA or NA  to consider becoming a sponsor to one of our current residents. Your support and guidance is invaluable to the lives of these individuals.

Identifying Employers: Do you know an employer who might be able to donate their services to the Saving Our Sisters community by giving a woman the chance to change her life through employment? Are you familiar with any businesses who may be interested in partnering with us? We greatly appreciate any volunteers who would assist with community outreach!

Odd Jobs/ Handyman: Saving Our Sisters always appreciates volunteers with experience in tmaintaining residential properties.  We are currently looking for volunteers to clean our gutters, paint our porch, re- tar our roof, and other odd jobs.   This work is invaluable to us!

Other: Is there any other way in which you can contribute to our community? Please let us know! We are interested in all contributions that members can give!
